Built in 1500 by Archduke Friedrich IV as the residence of the Tirolean sovereigns, The Golden Roof, also known as Goldenes Dachl in German is a famous tourist spot in Innsbruck, Austria. It is actually a three-story balcony on the central plaza at the heart of the Old Town.

It was constructed for Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor to serve as a royal box. Figures and events from his life, coats of arms and symbols can be witnessed in the reliefs found on the balcony. The roof was actually built in honor of Maximilian’s second marriage, to Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan. However, the emperor made it sure that he did not hurt anyone by imposing an image of himself between his two wives painted on his balcony.

About 2657 fire-gilded copper tiles enhance it’s magnificence and boldly proclaims its grandeur. Since 2003 it has been housing the International Alpine Convention’s Office.

Posted by admin in General, Guide, Hotels, Innsbruck Landmarks, Innsbruck Tour, Tips | 3 Comments

The 800-year-old town of Innsbruck is renown as a cultural center, and as a city of numerous art treasures and many historic structures. Representing the two contrasting emotions, the Triumphal Arch is currently one of the best known sights of Innsbruck. Empress Maria Theresa ordered it built in 1765 with a twofold purpose: To honor the marriage of her son, the Duke of Tuscany, later Emperor Leopold II, to Maria Ludovica from Spain, and to mourn the death of her beloved husband, Francis I Stephen of Lothringen, who died during the celebrations. The marble friezes were created by Balthasar Moll in 1744. One side of the Arch symbolizes the joyful aspect of the event, the other side the sadness. The south side shows motifs within the meaning of the marriage of the young couple, the north side of those who point to the death of the Emperor.

The Triumphal Arch is not made of wood but of stone. The decoration in relief image shows both state symbols of the Habsburg monarchy as well as personal and event-related presentations. The arch shows

  • the Austrian archduke with the Order of the Golden Fleece
  • the Bohemian crown Wenzel endowed by Maria Stephan Hungarian Order
  • a representation of Emperor Francis I and Maria Theresa with laurel wreath and the two Portraimedaillons
  • a profile view of the couple, Leopold and Maria Ludovica
  • Portraits of the Duchess Caroline of Lorraine and the Duke Charles of Lorraine, relatives of the emperor
